The FDA first approved VISX CustomVue wavefront-guided laser vision correction for Hyperopia (farsightedness) in Dececmber 2004.  The individualized treatment is approved for up to +3.00 diopters spherical equivalent, and up to +2.00 diopters of astigmatism.  A six month study revealed that more than four times as many people were very satisfied with their night vision after CustomVue treatment, as were before laser vision correction with their glasses or contact lenses.  Custom LASIK (individualized laser vision correction) has been shown to improve clarity of night vision, as well as, contrast sensitivity, by utilizing the wavefront-guided laser to correct the higher order aberrations that glasses and contact lenses cannot. 

In July 2007, the FDA approved CustomVue LASIK for Monovision.   Monovision LASIK has been shown to reduce the need for reading glasses in patients over 40 years of age.   During the LASIK consultation, the doctor determines the patient’s dominant eye.  A contact lens trial is then recommended to demonstrate monovision by fully correcting the dominant eye for distance and under-correcting the non-dominant eye for reading.  This contact lens trial is usually recommended for 1-2 weeks, to ensure the patient is happy and tolerating the monovision.  After surgery, some patients use glasses for night driving and/or long periods of reading; however, most patients function quite nicely without glasses for many everyday needs, e.g., seeing their cell phone or watch, reading a menu, cooking or computer.
