PRK in New Jersey

Have you been considering PRK in New Jersey? Look no further then Dr. Kenneth S. Miller and the friendly and knowledgeable staff of The Laser Vision Correction Center of New Jersey. PRK, which stands for Photo Refractive Keratectomy, was developed before LASIK and is similar to it with one important difference. During PRK, the surgeon does not create a flap in the outer cornea. Instead, the excimer laser (VISX Star S4) is applied directly to the surface of the cornea, completely removing both the outer layer (the epithelium) and the necessary amount of underlying tissue. Although this may result in slightly more postoperative discomfort and prolonged healing time, PRK is still a highly effective laser vision correction treatment and may be indicated for patients with certain corneal degenerations or thin corneas.

If you've been told that you are not a LASIK candidate, you may qualify for PRK in New Jersey. Years ago the PRK postoperative period was weeks of discomfort and blurred vision; however, with the advent of new technology soft contact lenses, which can be used as bandages (like the corneal flap with LASIK) much of the discomfort can be eliminated. Another advancement made in decreasing discomfort during the postoperative period is the punctum plug. This is a small, cylindrical, silicone insert, which is easily placed into the opening of the tear duct. These plugs help your eyes retain moisture and decrease discomfort. After PRK in New Jersey, we also recommend Thera Tears Nutrition (an Omega-3 oral nutritional supplement) and Restasis (the new prescription drop for dry eyes,) which also help to decrease the amount of dry eye after your surgery. Now, the majority of patients can return to work just five days after PRK at our New Jersey facility!
