A juicer and produceWhen it comes improving your vision and enhancing your eyesight, you can count on the team at our West Orange ophthalmology and vision correction center. Our eye care experts believe in advanced treatment as well as proper preventative care to improve people's vision.

Diet can have a major impact on your overall wellness. With that in mind, let's look at a few healthy foods that are great for your eyesight.

This one is a given. Carrots have long been associated with healthy eyes and good eyesight. These delicious veggies are an excellent source of beta-carotene, which can improve night vision and maintain vision health.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are great for your health, and especially good for your eyes. Kale, collards, spinach, and turnip greens, for instance, are both good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin. These nutrients have been shown to reduce the risk of age-related vision problems.

Colorful Vegetables

Colorful vegetables tend to be great sources of many vitamins and nutrients, such as lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Consider having more colorful vegetables in your diet, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, peppers, yams, corn, pumpkin, and more.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C, which is important for a variety of reasons. Among the benefits of vitamin C is reducing your risk of developing cataracts and macular degeneration.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a great source of vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids, which can help you experience great vision later in life. Consider snacking on peanuts, walnuts, almonds, and sunflower seeds.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are much better than simple breads and starches. Having whole grains in your diet can promote good overall health later in life, reducing your risk for various kinds of vision loss. Consider brown rice, quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat breads, and pastas.

Beans and Legumes

Beans are great for your health and excellent sources of protein. Kidney beans, lentils, black-eyed peas, and so forth are also good sources of bioflavonoids and zinc, which can help prevent age-related vision loss.

Eggs have a varying reputation, but they're generally good for you if you eat right and exercise regularly. Eggs are a great source of lutein and vitamin A, both of which promote good vision health.

Fish and Fish Oil

Fish are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. These are great for your overall healthy, and they can also protect your eyes from macular degeneration and cataracts. Fish oil supplements can also be helpful.

Liver is a great source of zinc, which can help you avoid serious vision loss later in life. If liver isn't your thing, oysters are also a good source of zinc.

Eat Right and Stay Active

Be sure to avoid fast food and junk food, and that you make fresh fruits and vegetables an integral part of your diet. In addition to eating right and staying hydrated with clean water, be sure to stay active. A little bit of exercise each day can go a long way toward improving your overall wellness.
